It’s Just Trump Being Trump

We’ve heard that day after day during the recent election cycle. Trump says something particularly stupid or mean, and his supporters dismiss the asinine or just plain hurtful statements as “just Trump being Trump.” In other words, what he says really doesn’t matter. It’s another way of saying he’s being himself, but that’s not really who he is; it’s just who he is. Wrap your head around that for a minute.

Also implied in that fully loaded baked potato of a statement is the idea that personality and policy are unrelated. Yes, you can sound like an evil sociopath, but you rally love people, and your policies will reflect your concern for their well-being.

So, who is the Trump that’s just being Trump? Enough Americans to elect him a second time are pretty certain he’s not who he continuously tells us he is; he’s actually Trump — you know, the other Trump, the one who’s just being Trump.

I don’t think we’ll have to hear that defense any longer, now that he can show us enacted policies that match the words, and if we in the end don’t find those policies are making America great, we’ll, we can tell ourselves that greatness is relative, that great is just a word—kind of like Trump itself: just a word that can mean anything one wants it to mean.
